Aan die gemeenskap van Struisbaai/ To the people of Struisbaai

A letter for the people of the sea

Aan die mense van Struisbaai, die vissersmense, hulle wat ons onderhou.

Struisbaai was vir die grootste deel van my lewe 'n tweede tuiste, maar die streek is al vir dekades, dalk meer as 'n eeu, my familie s’n. My hart is in, en altyd by, die grond en die water en die mense van die Overbergstreek, maar veral Struisbaai.

Ons is nie 'n volk in die middel van enigiets nie, ons is 'n volk verenig. Ons moet verenig wees teen ons gemeenskaplike vyand, wit oppergesag en kapitalisme.

Moet nie dat hulle inkom en ons dorp vernietig nie. Moenie dat hulle die lande wat aan ons en ons mense behoort, oorneem nie. Ons moet hulle beveg, want die lande en die seë moet bewaar word vir alle geslagte, toekomstig en huidig, om te geniet en om te versorg. Ons het 'n plig van solidariteit met mekaar, en bakleiery onder mekaar terwyl die rykes aanhou ryker word, sal net dien om ons in die nabye toekoms te vernietig, en dan sal hulle ons oortuig om mekaar te blameer en nie hulle nie. Hulle wat inkom en maak asof hulle ontwikkeling bring, maar uiteindelik al die werkende en vissende mense in die proses uitstoot.

Nou is die tyd om saam te kom en te vra wie is die ware vyand hier. Die antwoord is bloot wit oppergesag en kapitalistiese uitbuiting.

Wie maak die rykdom van hierdie land?

Die land se mense word uitgebuit om hierdie land se rykdom te skep. Dit is die vissersmense, die plaaswerkers, die fabriekswerkers, die mynwerkers, wat die rykdom en lewensmiddele skep wat nodig is om te oorleef. En die enigste manier waarop ons hierdie voortdurende uitbuiting kan bekamp, ​​is om te verenig en bewegings te bou wat die rykdom van die nasie aan sy mense sal teruggee. Die rykdom wat geskep word deur die arbeid van die uitgebuite mense van hierdie land moet daar binne bly, en nie uitgevoer word na wit eienaars in die buiteland, wit setlaar koloniale eienaars, of die korrupte kapitaliste en diewe wat steeds in ons voormalige revolusionêre bewegings voorkom nie. Steeds moet ons duidelik wees oor wie ons vyande is, en die vyande is nie die mense van Mosambiek, Nigerië, of Zimbabwe. Ons vyande is nie enige van die mense wat hierheen kom om 'n beter lewe vir hulle en hul gesinne te probeer maak nie. Die vyande is die stink ryk eiendomsontwikkelaars wat jou van jou grond af wil dwing.

Ons het mekaar nodig om hierdie geveg te wen. Ons kan nie toegee aan die grille van kapitalistiese uitbreiding nie; ons het gemeenskap nodig om hierdie uitbuiting aan’t stop te sit.

To the people of Struisbaai, the fisher people, the people that sustain us.

Struisbaai has been a second home to me for most of my life, but that region has been home to my family for decades, perhaps over a century. My heart is in and always with the land and the water and the people of the Overberg region, but especially Struisbaai. For as long as I have known it, it was a place divided. The poor and working class were banished to one corner, under serviced by the municipality, uncared for, untended and exploited. Over the years, the whites of the holiday area have encroached more and more on the lands of the true people of the area, the people who work the land and the sea and who provide sustenance and survival for all of us, barely being able to survive themselves.

The holiday makers come in droves over the summer, less so over the winter but there will still be a few who make it down there to that Southernmost tip of our beautiful country. 

Capitalists have worked hard to convince our people of Struisbaai that the enemy are the poor black people moving in from neighboring countries on the continent, sowing seeds of xenophobia. But we know that the true enemy are the white capitalists who have stolen everything from our people, exploited them to no end, and now seek to displace them even further from the land. They need the black and brown peoples of struisbaai for the labour and for the food, but they want them gone from the area, because they are a blight on the beautiful landscapes of the area. Black and brown people, in the mind of the white capitalist elites of South Africa, do not deserve a beautiful area like this. 

Another thing they have done is try and convince our people of Struisbaai that the enemy is black people, but I know our people will not buy into that propaganda and can see clearly through it. You see, white people still own over 70% of the agricultural land of South Africa, they also own close to 45% of residential properties in South Africa, even after the end of apartheid, and white people still own a staggering 60% of businesses in South Africa. All of this despite only making up 7.3% of the population of the country. 

Our enemies are not other black people. We must unite with each other and stop this bickering about not being black enough or not white enough, we are not a people who fall in the middle of anything, we are a people united, and we must be united against our common enemy, white supremacy and capitalism.

Do not let these people come in and destroy our town. Do not let them take over the lands that belong to us and our people. We must fight them, because the lands and the seas must be saved for all future and present generations to enjoy and to care for. We have a duty of solidarity with each other, and this fighting among each other while the rich continue to get richer is only going to serve to destroy us not too long from now, and then they will convince us to blame each other and not them who come in pretending to bring development, but end up pushing all the working and fishing people out in the process. For them, development means eradicating black and brown peoples from the area, forcing them into other towns where they can no longer fish or do the things they have done to survive. They provide no public services there. They rely on the suffering of the people of Struisbaai in order to line their pockets and to escape the blame. 

Now is the time to come together with one another and ask, who is the real enemy here. The answer is simply white supremacy and capitalist exploitation.  

We need one another in order to win this fight. We can not relent to the whims of capitalist expansion, we need community to combat this exploitation.
